Opera performed 100ft underground in Clearwell caves, an amazing natural cave system in the Forest of Dean.
Opera 100ft underground in a cave! Part of an extensive natural cave system, mined for iron ore to make one of Britain's most complex and oldest mine workings, the caves date back well over 4,500 years when Neolithic miners began digging ochre pigments. Later iron ore miners created hundreds of caverns and a warren of connecting passageways. You can explore nine atmospheric caverns absorbing their ancient and intriguing past. You will see why television programmes like Dr Who and Merlin have been filmed here many times. Walk through exciting, sometimes eerie, and impressive caverns connected by winding passageways, following in the footsteps of generations of miners. You may even catch a glimpse of the 'Old Man' that miners believed haunted the Caves - there have been several sightings by visitors! Please note this venue is quite far underground and the temperature is cool, so bring appropriate clothing. Access is by walking down a gentle descent.
