Founder & Director, Producer

Clementine Lovell

Clementine is Founder and Company Director of Pop-up Opera. She formed the company in 2011, after a period of studying and performing roles in Italy following her vocal training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has spent the past few years building the company, together with Fiona Johnston, working full time as producers to bring Pop-up Opera to an increasing number of venues around the UK.

Before embarking on full time vocal training, Clementine read Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge University (Fitzwilliam College) and worked as an archaeologist. She was also Community Archaeologist for Herefordshire County, working predominantly with volunteers and outreach groups.

As a soprano, Clementine has performed the roles of Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Norina (Don Pasquale), Laurette (Le Docteur Miracle), Rita (Rita) Despina (Così Fan Tutte), Serpetta (La Finta Giardiniera), Dido (Purcell Dido and Aeneus), and Angelo in the premier of a new opera Hagoromo by Massimo Priori (Teatro Riva del Garda). She has also appeared as part of the Tete a Tete contemporary opera festival at Hammersmith Riverside Studios, and as soprano soloist in numerous oratorios, concerts and recitals. She has performed around the UK, in Northern Italy, New Zealand and France, and live on BBC Radio 3. Clementine also performs as a folk singer and accordionist.

"a stylish Norina, who, projecting the Italian words in a vibrant soprano, offered a sharp characterization of the wilful heroine"

Opera Magazine, Don Pasquale

"Clementine Lovell was utterly beguiling as Adina"

The Times, L'elisir d'amore

"Clementine Lovell (multi-tasking company director, producer and leading lady) shone with seamless soprano vocals, capturing the essence of Norina’s character"

Fringe Opera, Don Pasquale

"Clementine Lovell (Norina) also used the bigger space to put her physical comedy skills to good use, and as the only woman she stole the show vocally. Her exquisite soprano seemed to soar to the top of tunnel and encircle the audience, like a nightingale’s song suddenly appearing out of the stillness"

Notes from Xanadu, Don Pasquale

"Clementine Lovell is a delicious Despina, a gorgeous, overworked minx who will do almost anything for cash"

Reviewsgate, Così fan tutte

"Clementine Lovell, who is also the producer of Pop-up, is perfect as the mischievous Despina,"

Daily Express, Così fan tutte

"Clementine Lovell has a beautiful, fresh soprano voice and was delicious in the role of the barmaid Adina"

The Daily Express, L'elisir d'amore

"Clementine Lovell stands out as the shrew Norina, who is being kept apart from her true love by his father, who is disapproving of the match. With perfect comedy timing and a faultless soprano, Lovell charms us within seconds and injects zestful energy into the show, which seems to be almost infectious."

Bargain Theatre, Don Pasquale

"the multitalented Clementine’s mesmerising performance as a coquettish Adina"

The Lady, L'elisir d'amore

"Lovell’s sweet soprano tones soar as she prances around as Norina, and commands the stage as the domineering Sofrina, truly making the audience sit up as at one point she strips down to a dominatrix outfit"

What's Peen Seen, Don Pasquale

"Clementine Lovell, here delivering another stunning turn as the recently ‘widowed’ Rita"

Performance Reviewed, Rita & La Serva Padrona

"While the cast was uniformly fantastic, I've got to single out Clementine Lovell as one of the reasons I had such a great night. As the maid Despina she's the comedy heart of the play. Even when she's not the centre of attention, you can glance over to her and guarantee she'll be doing something funny... A definite highlight was her solo performance during It's a Maid's Life, a perfect showcase of a vibrant, chaotic, pleasantly playful character."

London City Nights, Così fan tutte
